THE RISE AND RISE OF INDEPENDENT MAGAZINES

The new issue of Abitare includes and essay by Francisco Gonzalez de Canales talking about the current situation of independent magazines, featuring MAS Context among other great publications.
“Many of these newer publications were born after the international economic crisis of 2007-2008, and many of them have common traits.
They all have a transnational outlook and aim at mixed readerships in terms of culture, discipline and nationality. Wherever they are published, be it Germany, Macedonia, France, Italy, Croatia or Portugal, the common language of these publications is English. They are also aimed at a young audience, sometimes even at the under-thirties. In general, these publications reflect the wide interests of this new generation. Yet, this emphasis does not in any sense imply that they are naive or unprofessional or run on a shoestring. They aim to be on the ball and savvy, and they contextualize their coverage of debates and discussion within a social and cultural context which moves well beyond the architectural sphere, and attempts links with the economic and productive sectors as they are working today.” (Abitare)

“There’s something indescribably wonderful about a smart, beautifully designed printed publication that has something to say and says it well.” Word.
Great 1967 photograph of the Chicago River meeting Lake Michigan, Navy Pier and Lake Point Tower under construction. It is amazing to see all the industry that was in that area, now filled with hotels and residential towers. It was recently published in the italian magazine Casabella nº 790 June 2010 that includes an article on Lake Point Power. You can download the PDF here. (Thanks for pointing out the article Kevin!)
