MAS CONTEXT RELEASES OWNERSHIP

The concept of ownership, the exclusive rights and control over a property of any kind, has existed for centuries and in all cultures. Whether state, collective or personal, ownership is probably one of the most determining factors not only in defining our built environment but in the way we have shaped our society. But what if the way we live has changed? Can we redefine ownership to adapt it to the needs of the society? Can that redefinition provide new opportunities for our built environment? This issue will be dedicated to examining ownership in our current culture, ancient traditions, legal system and physical environment.
The thirteenth issue of the quarterly design journal MAS Context, OWNERSHIP, is already out. Contributors to this issue include Martin Adolfsson, William F. Baker, Kate Bingaman Burt, Eleanor Chapman, Santiago Cirugeda, Killian Doherty, Kirby Ferguson, Jeanne Gang, Iker Gil, Pedro Hernández, Network Architecture Lab, Quilian Riano, Denise Scott Brown, Richard F. Tomlinson II, XAM and Klaus who is the guest cover designer.
PLURAL, NEW ART DIRECTOR OF MAS CONTEXT

We are thrilled to announce that Plural, led by Jeremiah Chiu and Renata Graw, is the new art director of MAS Context. Having previously worked with them during MAS Context ANALOG, it is great to have the opportunity to establish an ongoing collaboration that addresses all the visual aspects of MAS Context.
Plural is a Chicago-based creative studio practice founded in 2008. With a focus on pursuing meaningful projects, Plural explores new approaches within the design process, experimenting in a wide range of media including print, web, video, sound, interactive and installation. They have received recognition by the Art Directors club, AIGA, The Type Directors Club, The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Communication Arts magazine, Print magazine, and How magazine among others.
The first change that you will see will be a new MAS Context website released early next month to coincide with our Spring issue, OWNERSHIP. Printed versions as well as other visual aspects of MAS Context will also be redefined throughout the year.
For more information about Plural and to see more of their work, check out their website.
Luis Urculo lecture in Chicago, Jan 25.
We are excited to present the lecture by Madrid-based architect Luis Urculo in partnership with the Graham Foundation.

In 2006, he opened his own studio developing ephemeral architecture projects, stage designs and video-installations for Conde Nást, Philippe Starck and Sybilla, among others. His work has been exhibited at the XI Bienale di Architettura di Venezia, Montevideo Bienial, COAM Foundation and other locations. He also works as a teacher with Jaime Hayón for Master of European Design Labs at Instituto Europeo di Design, Madrid.

We would love your feedback

We are starting the fourth year of MAS Context with the goal to keep improving the journal in any possible away, from the content to its design, from the ways we reach you to extending our network of collaborations, both online as well was with the events we put together such as MAS CONTEXT : ANALOG.
For that reason, we want to get your opinion about the journal, what you like, what you don’t like, what we can improve and what is working great. We want you to share any aspect that you want to highlight, whether big or small.
Also, in the upcoming weeks we will be applying for grants for MAS Context so any note of support that you might like to share would be incredibly valuable.

MAS CONTEXT RELEASES ABERRATION

If firmness, utility, and delight are the enduring pinnacles of architectural achievement, then it would appear architecture’s moral destiny is a foregone conclusion. But is it possible that opportunities for valuable cultural insight are being lost out of deference to this legacy? We examine forces, trends, and ideas that enhance the significance of the built environment despite, or due to, their deviant nature.
